Standards Chart

Chicken Standards

Animal Welfare
  • Staff need the appropriate skills to look after the health of their birds.
  • Routine flock checks are made at least twice a day.
Traceability
  • All chickens must be born, reared and slaughtered in the UK.
  • Records are kept to prove that all chickens are traceable back to the farms where they were reared.
Environmental Protection
  • Farms must be well maintained.
  • Any products applied to the land must have an agricultural benefit and be permitted for use.
Housing
  • No Cages. Housing must be lit to allow normal behaviours and rest.
  • Chickens have more living space than the EU and UK minimum requirements.
Bedding
  • All chickens must be provided with clean fresh bedding to a minimum depth of 2cm.
Antibiotics/Medication
  • A vet visits regularly to check the health and wellbeing of all birds.
  • Antibiotics are only given on prescription by a vet when a chicken is ill.
Food & Drink
  • All chickens must be provided with access to sufficient and traceable feed to maintain full health.
  • The feed and water systems are checked daily for malfunctions and cleanliness.
Other
  • Fit for purpose: Industry experts keep the standards up to date and reflect the best new thinking.

Pork Standards

Animal Welfare
  • Staff need the appropriate skills to look after the health of their pigs.
  • Routine checks are made at least once a day.
Traceability
  • All pigs must be born, reared and slaughtered in the UK to carry the Red Tractor logo.
  • All are traceable back to the farms where they were born.
Environmental Protection
  • Farms must be well maintained.
  • Any products applied to the land must have an agricultural benefit and be permitted for use.
Housing
  • All housing must be constructed and maintained to provide a safe and hygienic environment for the pigs to live.
Bedding
  • Floors must be safely constructed and maintained. If they cannot be drained they must be maintained with dry bedding.
Antibiotics / Medication
  • Red Tractor pig farms have quarterly vet visits where the health and welfare of the animals is reviewed.
  • Antibiotics are only given on prescription by a vet when a pig is ill.
Food & Drink
  • All pigs must be provided with access to sufficient & traceable feed to maintain full health.
  • Feed must be adequate and suitable for the age and body condition of the animal.
  • The feed and water delivery systems are checked daily for malfunctions and cleanliness.
Other
  • Inspections: Red Tractor pig farms are inspected more frequently than any other UK standards scheme.

Beef & Lamb Standards

Animal Welfare
  • Staff need the appropriate skills to look after the health of their animals.
  • There are regular checks, which are increased for new-borns and those about to give birth.
Traceability
  • All cattle and sheep must be born, reared and slaughtered in the UK to carry the Red Tractor logo.
  • All are traceable back to the farms where they were reared.
Environmental Protection
  • Farms must be well maintained.
  • Any products applied to the land must have an agricultural benefit and be permitted for use.
Housing
  • All housing must be constructed and maintained to provide a safe and hygienic environment for the animals to live.
Bedding
  • Animals have bedding that is regularly cleaned out and replaced.
  • Comfort is provided in sufficient lying areas.
Antibiotics / Medication
  • A vet visits regularly to check the health and wellbeing of all animals.
  • Antibiotics are only given on prescription by a vet when an animal is ill.
Food & Drink
  • All animals must be provided with access to sufficient & traceable feed to maintain full health.
  • Diet is suitable for the age and body condition of the animals.
  • The feed must remain clean and free from contamination.
Other
  • Processing:  No meat can carry the logo unless the animal has been stunned prior to slaughter.

Dairy Standards

Animal Welfare
  • Staff need the appropriate skills to look after the health of their cows.
  • There are routine daily checks, which are increased for new-borns and those about to give birth.
Traceability
  • All cows must live and be milked in the UK for dairy products to carry the Red Tractor logo.
  • Red Tractor dairy products are traceable back to the farms where the cows were milked.
Environmental Protection
  • Farms must be well maintained.
  • Any products applied to the land must have an agricultural benefit and be permitted for use.
Housing
  • All housing must be constructed and maintained to provide a safe and hygienic environment for the cows to live.
Bedding
  • All cows have bedding that is regularly cleaned out and replaced.
  • Cows must have their own bedding space.

  • A vet visits regularly to check the health and wellbeing of all cows.
  • Antibiotics are only given on prescription by a vet when a cow is ill.
Food & Drink
  • All cows must be provided with access to sufficient & traceable feed to maintain full health.
  • Diet is suitable for the age and body condition of the animals.
  • The feed must remain clean and free from contamination.

Fresh Produce & Crops Standards

Traceability
  • Systems in place ensure that all products can be traced back to the fields in which they were grown.
Environmental Protection
  • Both fertilisers and pesticides are applied to fields in a way which minimises pollution.
  • To ensure high levels of environmental protection, documented plans and procedures are implemented throughout the production process.
Food Safety
  • Staff involved with produce handling abide by strict hygiene standards – both in the field and packhouse.
  • If required, crops are washed with water safe enough to drink. 
Storage
  • Crops are stored in a way which promotes crop quality and safety.
  • Aspects of the store, for example temperature, are regularly monitored and recorded. 
Staff
  • All staff involved in the production process are adequately trained, ensuring high levels of competency and safety.
