Family run since 1824, Marriage’s produce a range of flours using the best quality wheat which they source where possible from local Essex farmers, many of whom have been farming families for generations.
This includes the Marriage family who have their own wheat farms just a few miles from Chelmer Mills.
The county of Essex is a prime wheat growing area, due to its climate and soil, and Marriage’s local commitment also helps to keep the food miles to a minimum in their supply chain.
The family-run business supplies bakeries and food manufacturers, as well as producing a range of home baking flours that have won an impressive 40 Great Taste Awards.
Marriage’s flour is produced using the best modern milling technology alongside some traditional techniques that have been used for generations to make more specialist products such as their wholemeal flours.
The wheat for this particular flour is traditionally milled on horizontal French Burr stones which have been used to mill flour for over a hundred years and play a vital part in the taste and texture of the flour.
One whole grain of wheat can create a staggering 20,000 particles of flour but it still takes around 350 ears of wheat to make enough flour for one 800g loaf of bread.
As a smaller miller, this gives Marriage’s the opportunity to create bespoke flours for their customers and the range focuses on heath, fibre and healthier baking.
Within their products, Marriage’s uses Red Tractor Certified wheat for their Finest Plain and Self Raising home baking flours and they have carried the logo on these packs for over ten years. All of the UK farms they source from work to Red Tractor standards which is something current Company Director Hannah Marriage, a sixth-generation family director, is proud to have as part of the company’s heritage and sourcing policy:
“With almost two hundred years as family-run British millers, we are committed to producing quality, consistent flours for both professional and home bakers.”
“The origin of our flours is a frequent question we get asked by our customers; being Red Tractor Certified helps us to demonstrate the provenance of our product and that our ingredients are produced and stored in a safe environment from reputable suppliers”.
