"All Red Tractor’s 78,000 farmers are independently inspected to make sure they meet our quality standards"

Pig Standards

Ensuring meat is safe to eat is a priority both for the meat industry and for consumers. In the case of pork, ham and bacon the Red Tractor farm standards are just one link in an integrated process to ensure that internationally recognised standards are applied throughout the production chain, from the farm to the supermarket shelf. But food safety is not the only issue covered by these standards. Animal welfare is important, so pigs must be well cared for. Their feed must be kept free from contamination and they must be housed under good conditions and transported in safe and clean vehicles. The standards allow our farmers to demonstrate that their animal husbandry and welfare practices meet and, in some cases, go beyond nationally agreed standards. With ham and bacon, we even have compositional standards that control the ingredients used in the curing process.
